The 3rd Recommendation Formulation Workshop on the National Health Extension Program Assessment was Held, Focusing on the Urban Health Extension Program

As part of the comprehensive National Assessment of the Ethiopian Health Extension Program, MERQ Consultancy PLC organized the 3rd phase recommendation formulation workshop for a two days (September 9-10, 2019) at its office, Addis Ababa. This workshop focused on the Urban Health Extension Program, considering its uniqueness and need for special focus. For this workshop, participants from the Ministry of Health, partners working on urban health, experts, and delegates from city administrations (Addis Ababa & Dire Dawa) and regional health bureaus were invited and participated.

The workshop was opened by Dr. Alula M. Teklu, CEO of MERQ Consultancy PLC and the Principal Investigator of the assessment. The key findings of the Urban Health Extension Program Assessment were presented to the participants of the workshop, followed by group discussions focusing on the interpretation of the findings and suggesting the possible plausible recommendations for improvement of the program. In the two days, there were rigorous discussions and debates among participants to give meaning to the findings and digging out recommendations. The groups presented their recommendations to the larger audience and the applicable recommendations were formulated.

The National Assessment of the Health Extension Program, conducted by MERQ, took the center of discussions on ARM 2019

The 21st Health Sector Annual Review Meeting (ARM2019), with the theme “Multisectoral Collaboration for Healthy and Prosperous Nation”, underwent from October 15-18, 2019 at the SkyLight Hotel, Addis Ababa. The review meeting was organized by the Ministry of Health and Addis Ababa City Administration Health Bureau. The review meeting was officially opened by Eng. Takele Uma, mayor of Addis Ababa, followed by key remarks by Dr. Amir Aman, Minister of Health.

In the Annual Review Meeting (ARM), MERQ participated in two major undertakings: poster presentation and group discussion. The MERQ team presented the over view, methods, quality assurance and stakeholders engagement approaches employed for the National Assessment of the Health Extension Program Assessment in four posters. The posters aim in creating a good understanding of the assessment among visitors and invitation to the group discussions on HEP and Community Engagement.

The National Health Extension Program (HEP) Assessment was one of the parallel group discussion sessions for two days (October 16-17, 2019). The first day was dedicated for the presentation of HEP assessment findings, followed by group discussion on the recommendations. The second day was allotted for the Community Engagement options for Health Extension Program. The MERQ team presented the findings and recommendations pertaining to community engagement, along with two other presentations on the same topic. A half day was assigned for group discussion on different technical areas of community engagement.

The poster presentation and the two days group sessions at ARM2019 attracted different stakeholders of HEP and PHC, from health extension workers to implementing partners and international donors.
