Course Description: This four-day practical training program with 15CEUs intended to improve the knowledge and skills of healthcare practitioners and researchers in developing, conducting, analyzing, and reporting qualitative research in health settings. The course provides participants with the foundational concepts, methods, and ethical principles needed to successfully apply qualitative research approaches to health-related topics and challenges.

Course Objective: To improve the qualitative research capacity of health professionals and researchers by providing them with the information and practical skills required to plan and perform context-relevant qualitative studies in the health sciences.

Course Contents: The course offers a thorough introduction to the philosophical foundations, key concepts, and practical applications of qualitative research. Common qualitative research approaches including phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case studies are also covered in the program. Additionally, sampling procedures, such as determining sample size and data saturation, as well as data collection and analysis tools, are covered.

Training Methods: To achieve its goal, the training will employ interactive lectures, brainstorming activities, group discussions, experience sharing, and Think-Pair-Share exercises to encourage active learning and practical application of qualitative research concepts in health science settings.

Assessments and Certification: Participants’ learning will be evaluated via pre-tests, active involvement in discussions and learning activities, direct observation with feedback, and group presentations. Evaluation will be done through draft proposal preparation (30%) and a final summative examination (70%). Trainees who score 75% or more on the summative exam will be automatically awarded a certificate upon successful completion of the course.

Course Description: This four-day training with 15 CEU is designed to equip health professionals, researchers, and program implementers with practical knowledge and skills to bridge the gap between evidence and practice in health systems. The course emphasizes the integration of evidence-based interventions into practice, considering local context, stakeholder engagement, and sustainability

Course Goal: To build the capacity of health professionals, researchers, and program implementers by equipping them with practical, context-specific knowledge and skills of implementation research that will enable them enhance to the performance of health systems.

Course Contents: The course covers the core concepts, principles, and frameworks of implementation science; identification of real-world health system challenges; formulation of context-specific implementation research questions; and selection of appropriate study designs and methods. It also includes the practical application of widely used implementation research frameworks and tools, including CFIR, RE-AIM, and TDF, etc.

Training methods: Training will be delivered through interactive lectures, group discussions, case studies, real-world scenarios, think-pair-share exercises, gallery walks, role plays, and simulations to promote active learning and participant engagement. Participants will also engage in group work, peer feedback, individual reflection, application exercises, and guided practice activities to strengthen practical skills and knowledge application.

Assessments and Certification:  This training will be assessed using both formative and summative assessments, with proposal drafting accounting for 30% and the final examination accounting for 70% of the total score. Certification requires a minimum of 80% attendance, successful completion of all required assignments, and a minimum overall score of 75%. Participants who meet these requirements will be awarded 15 CEUs and will automatically receive their certificates upon successful completion of the training.

Course Description: This training equips health professionals and managers with practical knowledge, tools, and frameworks to lead strategic planning and management processes within complex healthcare systems. Participants will gain skills to develop, implement, monitor, and adapt strategic plans that improve organizational performance and health outcomes.

Course Goal: To build the capacity of health professionals, planners, and managers to design, execute, and sustain effective strategic planning and management processes that strengthen health systems and improve service delivery.

Core Contents: The course covers strategic planning principles, models, and frameworks; environmental scanning techniques such as SWOT and PESTEL analyses; trend analysis; institutional readiness assessment; and the development of organizational vision, mission, goals, objectives, and strategies. The training also emphasizes the integration of equity, sustainability, innovation, and digital health considerations into strategic planning processes.

Training Methods: To increase participant involvement, interactive lectures, group discussions, peer learning, case studies, real-world scenarios, think-pair-share exercises, gallery visits, role plays, and simulations will all be used in the training. In order to improve practical skills and enable the application of learning to real-world circumstances, participants will also participate in group work, peer evaluation, individual reflection, and application exercises.

Assessment and certification: Case analyses, exercises in developing strategic plans, practical tasks, and a post-test are all part of the assessment process. Certification and 15 CEUs are awarded to participants who complete the course requirements and get a minimum score of 75%. After successfully completing the training, participants will automatically receive their certificates.

Course Description: This three-day training is intended to enhance the capacity of health professionals, early-career researchers, postgraduate students, and academic faculty in the principles and practices of scientific writing and medical communication. It focuses on the foundational aspects of planning, structuring, drafting, and ethically disseminating scientific work, with a focus on health sciences including medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy, biomedical sciences, and allied health fields.

Course Goal: To strengthen participants’ knowledge, skills, and confidence in writing scientifically and communicating effectively in health sciences, thereby improving the quality, ethics, and impact of scholarly and professional outputs in healthcare.

Course Contents: The course presents the fundamentals, types, formats, and communication channels of scientific writing and medical communication, as well as strategies for communicating medical information and research outputs. It also addresses scientific paper writing, publication processes, and ethical considerations in scientific writing and medical communication.

Training Methods: Interactive lectures, mini-talks, hands-on writing exercises, and supervised practice activities will be used to improve participants’ scientific writing skills. Learning will also be reinforced through peer and facilitator comments, group editing exercises, case studies, role plays, reflections, and application-based activities.

Assessment and certification: Participants’ learning will be evaluated using a pre-test, active participation in writing tasks, peer comments, and daily reflections. The summative evaluation will include a post-test (60%), practical activity reports, group assignments, and case analysis reports. Certification: Participants who attend 100% of the training sessions, actively participate, complete all required assignments, and score at least 75% on the summative evaluation will automatically get a certificate and 15 CEU upon the completion of the training.

Course Description: This two and half days training is designed to build foundational knowledge, attitude and skills to understand and implement equity-focused approaches in health programming. The courses focuses on the principles, paradigms Frameworks of Health Equity design, implement, monitor and Evaluate to equity-oriented programs and policies.  

Course Goal: To enhance the competencies of healthcare practitioners, researchers, and policymakers in designing, implementing, and evaluating equity-focused health programs.

Course Contents: The course comprises Introduction to Equity and Social Determinants of Health, Intermediary Determinants of Health Equity, and Equity in Scientific Research and Policy Formulation. It also deals with Evaluating Equity in Health Programs and a Case Study on Childhood Vaccination and Equity in Ethiopia.

Training Methods: The training will be delivered through interactive lectures, group discussions, and case studies to promote active learning and practical application of key concepts. Participants will also engage in gallery walks and individual reflection activities to encourage knowledge sharing, critical thinking, and deeper understanding of the course content.

Methods of Evaluation and Certification: Participants’ learning will be assessed through chapter evaluations, a pretest, a post-test (75%), and group presentations (25%) based on the activities outlined in Annex I, while the course will be evaluated through end-of-training feedback and evaluation. Participants who attend 100% of the program and score 70% or higher on the summative evaluation will earn a certificate and be awarded 12 CEUs.

Course Description: This 2-day course with 12 CEUs provides a comprehensive and practical foundation in Improvement Science for healthcare settings. The course emphasizes the effective use of data for learning and informed decision-making, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills to lead, manage, and sustain successful improvement initiatives in their organization

Course Goals

1. To empower healthcare professionals with the methodology and tools of Improvement Science to achieve measurable and sustainable improvements in their work.
2. To cultivate a mindset of continuous learning and systems thinking within healthcare teams.

Course Contents: The course encompasses the foundations of Improvement Science, the Improvement Leader’s Toolkit, Data as Your Guide, Not Your Judge, Seeing the Signal through Run Charts, and Mastering Variation through Shewhart Control Charts. It also includes Advanced Analysis for Deeper Insights, Specialized Applications from Bedside to Boardroom, and Capstone & Sustaining Improvement.

Training Methods: Training will combine interactive lectures, group discussions, case studies, and collaborative problem-solving activities to strengthen participants’ understanding of key concepts. Participants will also engage in hands-on data analysis, charting exercises, and action-planning sessions to apply learning to real-world improvement projects.

Methods and Certification: The learning of the trainees’ will be assessed through pre- and post-tests, active participation in discussions and training activities, and completion of a capstone action plan. Besides, participants who attend at least 80% of the course, actively participate in all learning activities, demonstrate competence in practical skills, and achieve a post-test score of 70% or higher will receive a certificate of completion.

MERQ is officially accredited as a CPD provider by the EMA in January 2025 and its license was renewed in 2026. n addition, MERQ holds a valid trade license to provide professional training and capacity-building services.

MERQ currently offers six EMA-accredited CPD courses. The CPD provider license and the accreditation certificates for all six EMA-accredited CPD courses are available on this website for public access and verification.

To ensure the delivery of high-quality CPD training, MERQ implements a comprehensive quality assurance system that includes:

• Full compliance with the Ethiopian MOH CPD Guideline and other applicable national CPD standards.
• Regular review CPD courses to ensure their quality, relevance, and alignment with national health priorities.
• Continuous monitoring of training delivery, participant learning and course outcomes.
• Periodic evaluation of trainers and facilitators to maintain standards of instructional quality.
• Collection and analysis of participant feedback to support continuous quality improvement.
• Regular improvement of training content, delivery methods, learning resources, and participant support services based on quality assurance findings.
• Periodic internal quality audits to ensure compliance with accreditation requirements and institutional quality standards.

• Participants who successfully meet the attendance and assessment requirements shall be eligible to receive a MERQ CPD Certificate of Completion.
• MERQ shall issue CPD certificates indicating the participant’s full name, course title, accreditation number CPD credit hours, training dates, certificate number and authorized signatures.
• Participant completion records shall be uploaded to the MOH iHRIS CPD system in accordance with the national CPD reporting requirements.
• CPD certificates shall be issued electronically after successful completion of the training and verification of all course requirements.
